  • Elementary Modern Standard Arabic I

    In Elementary Modern Standard Arabic I, students will learn the sounds and structure of Arabic, how to write in Arabic accurately from dictation, and basic vocabulary from Alif Baa: Introduction to Arabic Letters and Sounds. Working through the text, they acquire the ability to create simple sentences, greetings, and are able to talk about themselves and their family. After the completion of Alif Baa, the class will cover the first chapter of al-Kitaab fii Ta'allum al-'Arabiyya and encounter more challenging listening, reading, and writing exercises. Students are also introduced to the Egyptian and Levantine dialects to accelerate speaking proficiency.

  • Elementary Modern Standard Arabic II

    In Elementary Modern Standard Arabic II, students learn how to seek information using question particles such as “madha,” “ayy,” and “ayyat.” Students will also learn how to convey biographical information about oneself and one's family. In addition, the course will cover basic grammatical concepts such as the Arabic verb, cardinal and ordinal numbers, the dual form, number-noun agreement, plurals, objects of verbs, objects of prepositions, the present tense, and negation.

  • Elementary Modern Standard Arabic III

    In Elementary Modern Standard Arabic III, students will continue with the skills developed in Elementary Modern Standard Arabic II. They will develop and practice dialogue about Arabic foods and drinks, the four seasons of the year, and telling time and dates. Certain frequently used verbs and sound plurals are introduced. Students will also learn the past tense of verbs, verbal nouns, hollow and defective verbs, and imperatives. The course will cover chapters 4, 5, and 6 of Al-KItaab I (2011).

    Intermediate Modern Standard Arabic I improves students' reading levels through studying topics such as geography, history, and weather as well as allowing the student to communicate on basic social and political topics. The course continues with a systematic study of the Arabic verbal system.     In Conversational Arabic I, students gain experience in speaking Modern Standard Arabic and Arabic dialects.
