Frequently Asked Questions

 

Q: When does registration begin?
A: Registration for the following term begins mid-session. Please check the online registration page of the web site after Week 4 of each term to register.

Q: When does registration end?
A: The registration deadline is posted for each term on the Courses & Registration page. Students may still register after this date but must pay the $25.00 late registration fee. Classes may fill up before the deadline and at that time registration will be closed for that section.

Q: When do we receive our grades?
A: In most cases, grades are issued by the beginning of the following quarter.

Q: How much is private tutoring?
A: The rate for private instruction is $55/hr for institutions and $45/hr for students who pay out-of-pocket. If you would like one-on-one instruction in a language before next session, please contact the Department to make arrangements. No registration/membership fee is required.

Q: Does MEI offer free tutoring?
A: Frequently throughout the year, MEI will offer "Helping Hours" as a courtesy to current students needing additional help. These helping hours are offered based teacher availability and student demand. Postings of times and locations will appear on the Department's bulletin board on the ground floor and on this web site.

Q: Do you offer classes in any dialects other than the standard?
A: The Middle East Institute only offers courses in Modern Standard Arabic and Formal Spoken Arabic, Modern Hebrew, Turkish and Persian. If a student would like to study a particular dialect they may request it through private tutoring.

Q: Is the tuition all I need to pay to register for a course?
A: No. Tuition does not include registration fees or the cost of materials.
Tuition does not include the $35 registration fee.

Q: What level should I register for?
A: If you are coming from another program, please e-mail languages@mei.edu with your availability to schedule a placement appointment with the Department.

Q: Can I audit a class?
A: MEI does not offer students the option of auditing a class.

Q: Will I receive a full refund if I withdraw before my class starts?
A: Students who withdraw before the first day of classes will not receive a full refund. They will receive the amount paid minus the non-refundable items as specified in the tuition, withdrawal, and refund policies online .

Q: How do I register after having my tuition rolled over?
A: Please contact the Department to pay the appropriate Rollover Fee when registering.

Q: How do I obtain a copy of my official transcript?
A: Please send an e-mail to hwelch@mei.edu supplying as much of the following information as possible: Your name, years attended MEI, number/names of classes taken, address(es) you would like the transcript mailed to and number of copies to be sent to each. If you would like to send the transcripts along with your applications, please provide your address and the number of copies you need sent to you. Requests will be addressed in the order in which they are received.

Q: Where can I get a brochure of your schedule of classes, registration policies, etc.?
A: The Department does not have a printed brochure for our programs, as the most up-to-date information is available online.
