Publications Internships

The Publications Department is one of MEI’s busiest and most dynamic departments. We produce a tremendous amount and variety of print and virtual material which must adhere to the highest standards. Interns are crucial to the running of the department. During the course of your internship, it is expected that all interns will participate in and complete the following 5 tasks:

 

1. Maintain MEJ’s Chronology section

This entails daily open source news analysis for the countries for which you are responsible. The MEJ Chronology covers the region from Morocco to Pakistan, and includes Central Asia. It is a crucial archival resource for scholars. There will be regular deadlines when the Assistant Editor will edit your work and ensure its quality and breadth.

2. 20 book annotations

Each intern is required to write 20 book annotations (short synopses) for MEJ’s Recent Publications section of the Book Reviews.

3. Editing as needed

The Publications Department publishes an average of at least one article per week. At least two interns are required to edit each article prior to its publication. The publications which our department produces include: The Middle East Journal, Policy Briefs, Viewpoints, Encounters, MEI Bulletin, MEI’s Annual Report, and other jobs as needed.

4. Propose and execute a project (optional)

All Publications Department interns will have the opportunity to propose a department-related project that he/she will work on during the course of his/her internship. This includes but is not limited to commissioning a series of publications on a particular subject or developing other content that can be posted to the MEI website. Interns can choose to work alone or with one or more Publications intern and will receive regular guidance from the Publications staff.

5. Assist with Marketing Projects

6. Assist the Assistant Editor, the Book Review Editor, the Managing Editor, and the Editor of the Journal as needed

Technical skills:

  • Excellent writing skills required.
  • Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Excel skills a plus.
  • Marketing experience a plus.
