The Research Visualization and Design Internship at the Middle East Institute is an opportunity for students to transform research into innovative and consumable formats accessible to wide audiences. Your role is crucial in the Institute’s effort to use emerging web technology and media to connect with current users and new audiences.  This internship is ideal for someone with a strong research background and an interest in bleeding-edge web technologies.

As an intern, you can expect to:

1. Work with MEI scholars to generate novel data sets

Drawing on the breadth of available expertise, you will have the opportunity to work with scholars and staff across departments to identify interesting research data with an eye towards your intended presentation method.  An interest in quantitative analysis comes in handy.

2. Modernize the MEJ  "Chronology"

The MEJ "Chronology" is a crucial archival resource for scholars, but currently exists in an inaccessible format.  Work with the Publications department as we transition the Chronology to an interactive web app.

3. Research emergent data presentation media

Web media evolve quickly and there are new technologies developed every day.  If it doesn’t exist or isn’t quite perfect, work with a web developer to write the next new medium.

4. Contribute to ongoing MEI visualization projects

Create infographics to display research concisely and quickly.  Learn to use MapBox to quickly generate immersive maps with geo data. Work with Drupal to organize and serve content on the web.

In your cover letter, please highlight:

Your interest in quantitative research, expecially related to geography.

Any design background that you have.

Any programming experience you have.

* In lieu of the application writing sample, please include either 1) a link to your portfolio or 2) a sample research project.
