• Partner of The IRC Group, a Washington-based international consulting firm
• Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs (1977-1981)
• Participated in negotiations leading up to Camp David, in the Egypt-Israel peace treaty negotiations, and in the talks to establish autonomy for the West Bank and Gaza; led US negotiating team that established a multinational peacekeeping force in Sinai
• Ambassador to United Arab Emirates (1974-1976)
• Member of the US delegation to the Geneva Middle East Peace Conference (1973)
• Director of Egyptian Affairs at the US Department of State (1970); also served on the Arabian Peninsula and Arab-Israeli desks in Washington and held foreign assignments in Yemen, Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt
